When we came to Shanghai nearly three years ago, we were advised by some clued-up expats that the place to go to look for Chinese antique furniture was Annly's on Wu Zhong Lu. They were right.
We expected a wide selection of pieces. What we were unprepared for was the huge warehouse, where Annly stores her treasures until she starts their renovation. Nor were we aware of the scale of the transformations she performs a piece, some of which look beyond hope to our untrained eyes.
Over the time that we have been here, a trip to her ever-changing showrooms has become a regular weekend pastime for us, and Annly herself has became a respected friend. Her enthusiasm for her piece has led her to place them in same truly inspired settings: in a traditional Chinese teahouse, which reflects the splendour of this ancient civilization and in which her antiquates show all their glory; but also, in a typical North American house, which illustrates that her pieces can look at home in any setting and can enhance any cultures.
Annly is full of wit and wisdom and knowledge about antiques. We will take back home to England with us not just our lovely antiques, but also memories of a unique and wonderful woman.
